Marilyn Manson avoids 'becoming Van Goth'

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Marilyn Manson / Twitter

Marilyn Manson tweeted a photo of his injured ear Friday.

On the bright side, if Marilyn Manson had lost an ear, that's something to stick in formaldehyde and display in his living room, right?

"I was hit by a glass table in a dangerous fight. I was however, the victor but had to have 24 stitches to keep my ear from becoming Van Goth," the shock rocker tweeted Tuesday, followed by a close-up of his bandaged ear.?

Manson and Rob Zombie's Twins of Evil tour had touched down in Basel, Switzerland, that night -- and that's where the aforementioned brawl reportedly went down.?

Manson scored a Grammy nod for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance?

Aside from his clever play on words, Manson didn't provide any further details regarding what went down.?

Ouch! See more celebrity injuries?

He and Zombie are scheduled to touch down in Ekaterinburg, Russia, Saturday night.?

Fight over gay rights milestone divides Maryland

BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Ezekiel Jackson is black and his wife is white. As Jackson campaigns to legalize gay marriage in Maryland, he likens the plight of same-sex couples to that of interracial couples, who were banned from marrying in the state until 1967.

Maryland was one of the last U.S. states to allow blacks and whites to marry, but on Tuesday it could become one of the first states to legalize same-sex marriage by a popular vote. Voters in Maine and Washington are also heading to the polls to decide whether to let gays and lesbians wed.

Six U.S. states and the District of Columbia already allow gay marriage, but the decisions were made by court rulings and legislative action.

Interracial couples used to travel from Maryland to nearby Washington D.C. to wed before the state ban was lifted. It is the same trip same-sex couples now make to marry.

"I couldn't help but make that comparison," said Jackson, an organizer with the Service Employees International Union and the head of Marylanders for Marriage Equality.

Black voters have traditionally been reliable foes of same-sex marriage. In Maryland, Emmett Burns, a prominent black pastor, has been a leading opponent of the referendum and says it is insulting to African Americans to describe marriage as a civil rights issue.

"When did sodomy get to be a civil right?" Burns said in an interview. "Two consenting adults can do what they want in private but you want to change the definition and make it marriage? No."

A quarter of the Maryland electorate is black and public opinion polls suggest the outcome of the referendum will be close.

"It was against the law for black people to be married to one another at one time," Ralph Moore, a community activist, said at a recent debate in Baltimore. "The definition of marriage has constantly been changed in this country."

"Black people should not be a part of denying rights," he said. "That's not how we got here."

Gay marriage campaigners say they are beginning to win over more black voters, boosted by President Barack Obama, who was the first U.S. president to support same-sex marriage and has endorsed the efforts in Maryland, Washington and Maine.

Black celebrities like hip hop moguls Jay-Z and Russell Simmons have also spoken out in support of same-sex marriage.

'MOTHERLESS OR FATHERLESS FAMILIES'

But in Maryland, some voters - black and white - will never be convinced. Last month, several dozen people gathered at a Christian center in Davidsonville for an event held by the Maryland Marriage Alliance - the main group opposing the referendum.

"When you say that a homosexual family is equal to mine, that's offensive to me," said David Austin Nimicks, a lawyer with the Alliance Defense Fund. "We're talking about the intentional creation of motherless or fatherless families."

Three panelists made a case that expanding the right to marriage beyond heterosexual couples would weaken the institution and thus weaken the family.

"There's a reason the left is going after marriage," said Doug Mainwaring of the Capital Tea Party Patriots, who is gay. Family and the church are "a bulwark against government taking over our lives."

Mainwaring said allowing same-sex marriage will open the door to legalizing other kinds of unions, like "threesome relationships."

"They're trying to make this look so normal, so conservative, so appealing - they're just like you and me," he said of the campaign to legalize gay marriage.

Demographics are on the side of those pushing for expanded marriage rights. National polls consistently show more people support same-sex marriage than oppose it and that young people back same-sex marriage by a large margin.

Even Jackson, who is helping to lead the effort, said that until a few years ago, he was "very much against homosexuality." Then, he learned that a close childhood friend was gay.

He said the news forced him to reexamine his views.

"It wasn't someone throwing talking points at me that changed my mind. It was that I could relate it to something real," he said. "I think that's happened every time a group has changed their mind."

Carlton Smith, a founder of Baltimore Black Pride, said he does not personally plan to marry if the referendum passes. Smith, who is 49, says he has survived a lifetime of bullying from family members and fellow blacks and from the white gay community, and he hopes life will become easier for gay, black men in Baltimore.

"It will seem close to equality," he said. "We're not all there yet but it will be one more milestone I'll live to see."

Cell Service Deteriorating in NY, NJ; Verizon Regarding Damage ...

Verizon?s flooded headquarters on West St., lower Manhattan (The Wall Street Journal)

As cleanup efforts continue across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, some of America?s largest telecommunications companies are coming under increased scrutiny for being caught flat-footed after Hurricane Sandy roared across the tri-state region, causing damage Verizon?s chief technology officer now admits is worse than 9/11.

As of this morning, Verizon Wireless? network is reportedly straining, particularly in Manhattan and Brooklyn, where cell service that worked immediately after the storm is now increasingly failing.

Verizon said 94% of its cell sites were operational after the storm, but some local officials in the area believe 94% of Verizon?s wireless network has now failed them when they need it the most.

Many telecom companies, particularly AT&T, are being criticized for excessive secrecy about the ongoing state of their networks post-Sandy. AT&T, which left its customers in the dark about service restoration as late as last night while asking customers to contribute $10 to the American Red Cross, finally mass e-mailed customers a statement devoid of much detail signed by Steve Hodges, president of AT&T?s northeast region.

?Restoring our wireless network is our top priority,? Hodges writes. ?The vast majority of our cell sites in the Northeast are online and working. We are working issues in areas that were especially hard-hit, where flooding, power loss, transportation and debris all pose challenges. Our crews are working around the clock to restore network service to areas that were impacted by the storm. We will not stop until we repair all of the damage to our network and restore service back to its full capacity.?

The Federal Communications Commission correctly predicted?the situation with mobile phones could get worse before it gets better, as backup power wears down and flooding persists. At a press conference held yesterday, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski revealed at least a quarter of all cell sites in areas damaged by Sandy were not operational. Those numbers were less optimistic that those provided by carriers.

The FCC this week activated the?Disaster Information Reporting System, a central reporting point for telecommunications companies to update the agency regarding outages and other service disruptions. The FCC also alerted providers that in emergency circumstances, they can assist companies getting fuel for generators and help locate portable cell tower equipment for companies caught unaware.

AT&T?s belated letter to customers affected by Hurricane Sandy

Some may need the help.

New York State Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz both reported Verizon Wireless? outages are worsening in Brooklyn and midtown Manhattan.

Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today told Sen. Chuck Schumer the federal agency will reimburse New York for 100 percent of the costs incurred restoring power across the storm areas. But that may not expedite how quickly power returns.

Power restoration is expected to bring most cell towers back online. Worsening service is being attributed to battery backup or generator equipment exhausting on-hand fuel supplies, which usually keeps service up and running for up to three days. That means cell towers without power and unreachable by workers will have begun failing late Wednesday into today.

Damage assessments are further behind in New Jersey, the state that took the worst impact from Hurricane Sandy.

Stop the Cap!?obtained some new figures from cell phone companies regarding the state of their networks:

  • Verizon: Still holding to 94% operational in storm areas;
  • AT&T: Declined to comment except to say ?the vast majority? of their network is operational;
  • T-Mobile: 80% operational in NYC, 90% operational in Washington, D.C.
  • Sprint: 75% operational
http://www.phillipdampier.com/video/WSJ Verizon Offices Damaged 11-1-12.mp4

Verizon?s critical network takes another hit. ?We?ve been here before,? says one Verizon executive, referring to the destruction from the 9/11 terrorist attacks which severely damaged the same facility on West Street now flooded out. (3 minutes)

Our readers report that cell service becomes spotty to non-existent in coastal New Jersey and Connecticut. In Manhattan anywhere south of 29th Street, readers report almost no signals at all.

Verizon?s damaged facilities include those on West and Broad Streets in Manhattan (circled).

Residents are trading tips about ?magic spots? where cell service does suddenly pop up, and Gizmodo notes?the only place in Alphabet City (the east side in southern Manhattan) to get service is on literally one street corner, where crowds congregate to make and receive calls.

The other salve for telecom withdrawal is the nearest pay phone.

Amusing stories of 20-somethings waiting in long lines only to be confounded by unfamiliar pay phones are appearing in the New York media. One radio station even aired basic instructions for members of the Millennial Generation that have never heard of inserting coins into telephones.

The biggest challenge for the city?s pay phone vendors is clearing them of coin overloads, something unheard of before the storm.

The often maligned pay phone has exposed the limits of the ?more advanced? and expensive networks that were supposed to replace them. Despite claims of superiority for wireless service, northeast residents have once again discovered it has its limits:

  • They don?t work during major weather events that knock out power and limit access to maintain backup generators;
  • Cell networks are less capable of handling large call volumes, a problem made worse when cell phone refugees in other areas seek out remaining cell signals, further congesting the network;
  • Wireless is just as susceptible to wireline or fiber failures on the ground. Cell towers typically connect to providers through wired backhaul circuits, which knock out cell service if they fail;
  • Cell phone users need power to recharge their power-hungry smartphones. Batteries drain even faster searching for a weak or non-existent cell signal;

Hardest hit remains Verizon, which allowed reporters access inside damaged facilities to help New Yorkers better understand the scope of the problem.

http://www.phillipdampier.com/video/WSJ Wireless Network Outages 11-1-12.mp4

The Wall Street Journal takes a look at the state of the wireless communications networks across the northeastern U.S. and when service will be back. ?(4 minutes)

Eleven years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks that took out Verizon?s West Street office when buildings collapsed at the nearby World Trade Center, Verizon is likely going to have to re-learn some lessons about catastrophe management as flood waters recede.

Verizon has deployed this 53-foot Emergency Mobile Communications Center for use by the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management that provides Internet and phone service.

The Wall Street Journal was able to obtain access inside the damaged facilities, and the reporter covering the event was left somewhat stunned by the scope of the damage.

In the middle of organized, yet chaotic recovery efforts was Verizon?s chief technology officer Tony Melone who had seen enough to declare the damage worse than 9/11.

The pictures of several feet of muddy water from the nearby Hudson River covering the lobby of the company?s headquarters on West Street said it all. The mostly salt water was an unwelcome guest in Verizon?s building, especially considering the five level basement below the lobby contains critical cables and telecommunications equipment. Almost four of those basement floors were completely flooded. After the water was pumped out, dampness and leaves from nearby trees remain littered on the floor.

One lesson learned after 9/11 was not to place critical phone switches below ground level. After reconstruction, the switches were moved to a higher floor and consequently were left undamaged.?But while Verizon moved its backup generators upstairs, it left the pumps and fuel tanks that power them in the basement ? leaving them inoperable.

This morning, passersby on West Street have to step around Verizon?s network of generators now running outside of the building, right next to large temporary fuel tanks to power them.

Verizon central offices in other parts of Manhattan, particularly further southeast on Broad Street, were never upgraded and are in worse shape, with electrical equipment damaged perhaps beyond repair.?The force of the water was strong enough to bend the 86 year-old steel and bronze doors. Workers there are still trying to get water out of the building, shoving a pipe down an elevator shaft to facilitate pumping.

Verizon has some redundancy built into its network to protect its most valuable customers. That kept the landline phones working at the New York Stock Exchange, even though other landline and wireless customers will have ?to wait longer for service to resume.

AT&T?s generator staging area near Meriden, Connecticut. (Credit: Brian Pernicone)

Some critics of the increasingly concentrated telecommunications landscape think Verizon and other companies have still not learned enough to prevent the kinds of service disruptions that will leave some customers without service for weeks.

It is hard to miss the bustle outside of Verizon?s offices damaged by the storm, watching flood water drain down the street. But things are murkier at cell phone providers who have been less than forthcoming about specific outage information and service restoration assessments.

Some have advocated the federal government step in and require cell phone service, now deemed essential by an increasing number of Americans, be protected with robust backup solutions to keep service up and running after catastrophic weather events.

After Hurricane Katrina, the FCC in 2007 tried to issue new rules that required a minimum of eight hours of backup power for all cell sites. The industry balked, predicting it would lead to??staggering and irreparable harm? for the cell companies. One wireless trade association warned their members might take several cell sites down if they were forced to provide backup power.

The CTIA Wireless Association and Sprint-Nextel sued the agency in federal court and the Bush Administration?s?Office of Management and Budget eventually killed the proposed regulations.

T-Mobile and AT&T have cut an emergency deal to share their cellphone networks in areas affected by Superstorm Sandy. They?re trying to make it a little easier for customers to get a signal as carriers restore their networks. Some say companies should be forced to make their networks more resilient. National Public Radio?s Morning Edition has the story. (November 1, 2012) (3 minutes)

Galaxy halos are produced by orphan stars, findings indicate

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Isolated stars kicked to the edges of space by violent galaxy mergers may be the cause of mysterious infrared light halos observed across the sky, according to UC Irvine and other astronomers.

"Background glow in our sky has been a huge unanswered question," said UCI physics & astronomy professor Asantha Cooray, lead author of a paper about the discovery in the Oct. 25 issue of the journal Nature. "We have new evidence that this light is from stars that linger between galaxies. Individually, they're too dim to be seen, but we think we're seeing their collective blush."

Cooray and colleagues examined 250 hours of data captured by NASA's powerful Spitzer Space Telescope from a large swath of sky called the Bo?tes field, which covers the equivalent of 40 full moons near the constellation of the same name. The large scale allowed the researchers to better analyze the patterns of diffuse light.

"Studying this faint background was one of the core goals of our survey, and we carefully designed the observations in order to directly address this important, challenging question," said co-author Daniel Stern of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

The team concluded that the infrared glow, while weak, is too strong to be consistent with earlier theories that it's being emitted by the very first celestial bodies. "The glow is just too bright to be from those ancient, far-off galaxies and stars," said UCI doctoral student and co-author Joseph Smidt.

Instead, the scientists have a new theory, saying it's "intracluster" or "intrahalo" starlight. Early in the history of the universe, as galaxies grew, they collided and bulked up in mass. As the crashing galaxies became gravitationally tangled, strips of stars were shredded and tossed into space as leftovers. Galaxies also grow by "swallowing" dwarf neighbors, a messy process that likewise results in stray stars. Cosmologists believe these orphaned stars produce the diffuse, blotchy smatterings of light that make up galaxy halos extending well beyond the outer reaches of galaxies.

Additional research is needed to confirm the theory. But the researchers say it makes sense. "A lightbulb went off when we were reading earlier papers predicting the existence of diffuse stars," Cooray said. "They explain what we're seeing with Spitzer."

UCI agrees to strip Armstrong of his 7 Tour titles

GENEVA (AP) ? Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life by cycling's governing body Monday following a report from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that accused him of leading a massive doping program on his teams.

UCI President Pat McQuaid announced that the federation accepted the USADA's report on Armstrong and would not appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

"Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling and he deserves to be forgotten in cycling," McQuaid said at a news conference. "This is a landmark day for cycling."

The decision clears the way for Tour de France organizers to officially remove Armstrong's name from the record books, erasing his consecutive victories from 1999-2005.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme has said the race would go along with whatever cycling's governing body decides and will have no official winners for those years.

Armstrong's representatives had no immediate comment.

USADA said Armstrong should be banned and stripped of his Tour titles for "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen" within his U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams. Under the penalties, he loses all his race results since August 1998.

The USADA report said Armstrong and his teams used steroids, the blood booster EPO and blood transfusions. The report included statements from 11 former teammates who testified against Armstrong, including testimony that he pressured them to take banned drugs.

"I was sickened by what I read in the USADA report," McQuaid said, singling out the testimony of former Armstrong teammate David Zabriskie. "The story he told of how he was coerced and to some extent forced into doping is just mind boggling."

Armstrong denies doping, saying he passed hundreds of drug tests. But he chose not to fight USADA in one of the agency's arbitration hearings, arguing the process was biased against him. USADA's report, released earlier this month, was aimed at showing why the agency ordered the sanctions against him.

"At the moment Lance Armstrong hasn't admitted to anything, yet all the evidence is there in this report that he doped," McQuaid said.

Former Armstrong team director Johan Bruyneel is also facing doping charges, but he is challenging the USADA case in arbitration.

On Sunday, Armstrong greeted about 4,300 cyclists at his Livestrong charity's fundraiser bike ride in Texas, telling the crowd he's faced a "very difficult" few weeks.

"I've been better, but I've also been worse," Armstrong, a cancer survivor, told the crowd.

While drug use allegations have followed the 41-year-old Armstrong throughout much of his career, the USADA report seems to have marked a turning point in the saga. Longtime sponsors Nike, Trek Bicycles and Anheuser-Busch dropped Armstrong last week, as did other companies, and he stepped down as chairman of Livestrong, the cancer awareness charity he founded 15 years ago after surviving testicular cancer which spread to his lungs and brain.

Armstrong's astonishing return from life-threatening illness to the summit of cycling offered an inspirational story that transcended the sport. However, his downfall has ended "one of the most sordid chapters in sports history," USADA said in its 200-page report published two weeks ago.

Armstrong has consistently argued that the USADA system was rigged against him, calling the agency's effort a "witch hunt" which pressured witnesses into cooperating.

"It is for Mr. Armstrong to defend himself against such witness statements that he deems to be incorrect. It is not for the UCI to do so," the governing body said in a statement.

If Armstrong's Tour victories are not reassigned there would be a hole in the record books, marking a shift from how organizers treated similar cases in the past.

When Alberto Contador was stripped of his 2010 Tour victory for a doping violation, organizers awarded the title to Andy Schleck. In 2006, Oscar Pereiro was awarded the victory after the doping disqualification of American rider Floyd Landis.

USADA's position is that the Tour titles should not be given to other riders who finished on the podium, such was the level of doping during Armstrong's era.

The agency said 20 of the 21 riders on the podium in the Tour from 1999 through 2005 have been "directly tied to likely doping through admissions, sanctions, public investigations" or other means. It added that of the 45 riders on the podium between 1996 and 2010, 36 were by cyclists "similarly tainted by doping."

The world's most famous cyclist could still face further sports sanctions and legal challenges. Armstrong could lose his 2000 Olympic time-trial bronze medal and may be targeted with civil lawsuits from ex-sponsors or even the U.S. government.

McQuaid said the UCI's board will meet Friday to discuss the Olympic issue and whether to update other race results taking account of Armstrong's disqualifications.

A so-called "Truth and Reconciliation" commission, which could offer a limited amnesty to riders and officials who confessed to doping practices, will also be discussed, UCI legal adviser Philippe Verbiest said.

In total, 26 people ? including 15 riders ? testified to USADA that Armstrong and his teams used and trafficked banned substances and routinely used blood transfusions. Among the witnesses were loyal sidekick George Hincapie and admitted dopers Tyler Hamilton and Landis.

USADA's case also implicated Italian sports doctor Michele Ferrari, depicted as the architect of doping programs, and longtime coach and team manager Bruyneel.

Ferrari ? who has been targeted in an Italian prosecutor's probe ? and another medical official, Dr. Luis Garcia del Moral, received lifetime bans.

Bruyneel, team doctor Pedro Celaya and trainer Jose "Pepe" Marti opted to take their cases to arbitration with USADA. The agency could call Armstrong as a witness at those hearings.

Bruyneel, a Belgian former Tour de France rider, lost his job last week as manager of the RadioShack-Nissan Trek team which Armstrong helped found to ride for in the 2010 season.

A middle school turns out chess champions in 'Brooklyn Castle'

'Brooklyn Castle' has the right moves.

Times have changed, though. At least they have at Intermediate School 318, an inner-city school in Brooklyn, New York. Despite the fact that more than 65 percent of its students are from homes with incomes below the federal poverty level, this middle school has consistently trained the most-winning junior-high chess teams in the nation.

As inspirational academic stories go, it doesn?t get much better than this, which is no doubt what attracted first-time feature filmmaker (and Brooklyn native) Katie Dellamaggiore to make a film about I.S. 318. As a piece of filmmaking, ?Brooklyn Castle? is not going to set the world on fire. Often scattershot, it frequently stops short of delving into the lives of the young chess mavens just when things are getting interesting. But the kids and their faculty coaches and sponsors are so spirited that this raggedness almost doesn?t matter.

Although the chess team has about 85 members, Dellamaggiore focuses on the five at the top, each highly individual. Rochelle, age 13, in eighth grade, is soft-spoken but determined to be the first African-American female to be ranked a master. She is shy about talking chess because she thinks it makes her sound ?like a nerd,? especially in such a male-dominated world.

Justus, in sixth grade, has been selected to join the United States Chess Federation?s All-American team. Of all the kids on view here, he seems the most withdrawn, rarely cracking a smile. His focus is all on the board, and when he loses, which is not often, the distraught 11-year-old comes through loud and clear. Alexis, 12, in seventh grade, is the pride of his working-class immigrant parents. He hopes to support them one day by getting a good job, which, for him, means getting into a top-ranked New York public high school. Patrick, 11, in seventh grade, has a condition that has been diagnosed as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The discipline of chess has a marked positive effect on all aspects of his life.

And then there is Pobo, 12, in seventh grade, who is a born glad-hander. Calling himself ?Pobama,? he runs successfully for class president, campaigning to restore budget cuts to after-school programs like chess. Budget cuts, beginning in 2009, when the film starts, are incessant throughout this story. At one point, in 2011, assistant principal/coach John Galvin uses $8,000 of his own money to cover the cost of the team?s trip to the nationals in Dallas.

Why is this particular school so good at cultivating terrific young chess players? Clearly Galvin, along with principal Fred Rubino and head chess teacher Elizabeth Vicary, has a great deal to do with the success. But the film leaves hanging the notion that great chess players are created rather than born.

What?s probably true is that the innate intelligence of these children, which might have been stifled otherwise, is brought to the fore by chess. It?s an intellectual discipline that, as we can see from the kids, is also a life discipline.

No wonder they fight so hard to keep the chess program intact. They know that there is much more at stake here than moving pieces around on a board. Grade: B+ (Unrated.)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain was hit by a flying broken bat in the 12th inning and left Game 4 of the AL division series against Baltimore with a bruised right elbow Thursday night.

X-rays were negative.

Matt Wieters led off the 12th with a single to left field and shattered his bat. A large piece went twirling toward the mound and hit Chamberlain's surgically repaired pitching elbow.

Chamberlain threw down his glove and bent over in pain.

He was checked out by New York trainer Steve Donahue and manager Joe Girardi. While Chamberlain threw three test pitches, Girardi went back to the dugout.

Chamberlain finished his pitches and walked off the field with Donahue. David Phelps came in to relieve with the score 1-all.

The Yankees led 2-1 in the best-of-five matchup.

Taunted teen dropped out but alleged bullying continued online

A 16-year-old San Diego girl says there was no escaping the alleged bullies who taunted her relentlessly at high school, even after she dropped out.

Katie Uffens left Westview High School earlier this year after she overheard alleged school bullies talking about the "KKK, the Kill Katie Klub."

"I didn't know if it was a joke or they were really trying to kill me," Uffens told ABC News' San Diego affiliate KGTV.

Her mother, Giselle Uffens, a former Mrs. California, appealed to the school administration and the San Diego police who at first declined to press charges, citing lack of evidence.

That's when her daughter left the school, enrolling in a home-school charter program instead.

"I said we are going to move, this is going to go away," Giselle Uffens said.

But Uffens' mother says the bullies continued to harass her daughter online through social media.

She collected defamatory photos and comments on Facebook, Twitter and recorded dozens of allegedly threatening phone calls made to their house.

"The kids didn't stop, they kept calling us, calling us, calling us," she said.

Police finally intervened earlier this month, taking two boys out of class at Westview. One of them, Nick Aguirre, said the "Kill Katie Klub" was just a joke.

"Basically, what I said to one of my friends was 'Kill Katie Klub,'" Aguirre explained to KGTV. "It was a one-liner thing. We never had any intentions to hurt anybody."

Aguirre acknowledged that Uffens was unpopular and didn't deny that he picked on her. But he said he's the real victim, having been dragged out of school publicly by police.

"She's bullying people at Westview," he said.

Among parents, the case has promoted bitter debate about how best to handle such alleged abusive behavior among teens.

Some parents now accuse the school of ignoring its duty to protect students because of concerns about the district's reputation.

But school officials said, "Incidents are taken seriously and investigated. We work very closely with law enforcement when appropriate.

On the same day Aguirre and the other teen were arrested, the school sent a letter home to parents reminding them of the school's zero-tolerance policy on bullying. Each year students and parents are required to sign the disciplinary code that outlines the hate and harassment policy.

"Zero tolerance is zero tolerance," Westview parent Kevin Ellio said. "You shouldn't have to tolerate any type of bullying. It's just unacceptable."

The two alleged bullies now face possible criminal charges. And the Uffens family has hired a lawyer.

Bobby V: Red Sox roster is 'weakest' ever in Sept.

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:27 p.m. ET Sept. 14, 2012

TORONTO (AP) - Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine says his team's roster is beyond depleted.

Valentine was asked before Friday night's game in Toronto whether the last-place Red Sox could use some extra call-ups.

Valentine answered: "Are you kidding?" He then added: "This is the weakest roster we've ever had in September in the history of baseball. It could use help everywhere."

The Red Sox began the day with a record of 64-80 and were 17 1/2 games behind in the AL East.

Boston's roster has been thinned by trades and injuries. Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto were dealt to the Dodgers last month, slugger David Ortiz and rookie Will Middlebrooks are on the disabled list and former MVP Dustin Pedroia is away following the birth of his second son.

New Versions of Google Chrome Will Finally Let You Say You Don?t Want Advertisers Spying On You

If you?re paranoid about ad networks tracking your behaviour and compiling a file on your tastes somewhere, there?s good news. Google Chrome?s developer build finally got built-in Do Not Track functionality, meaning Chrome will finally join the club with Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer.

Google reluctantly agreed to add the feature back in February, but now it?s finally shown up in test builds, and should roll out into stable versions of Chrome by the end of the year. The feature will almost certainly not default to ?on? but privacy-conscious users will soon be able to flip a switch instead of hunting down some third party extension. Of course, there are no measures to guarantee that ad networks will actually respect the setting, but soon all users will at least be able to state their preference, even if that?s just the equivalent of asking nicely. PFT: Harrison won't play for Steelers on Sunday

Brendon AyanbadejoAP

Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo said Friday he was ?surprised,? to hear a local politician?s effort to get the Ravens to keep him from speaking in favor of gay marriage.

Maryland House of Delegates member Emmett C. Burns Jr. sent a letter to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti saying he was ?appalled and aghast? by Ayanbadejo?s stance on the issue and urged Bisciotti to silence him.

?Just what our country was founded on, for someone to try to take that away from me, I was pretty surprised that something like that would come up, especially from a politician,? Ayanbadejo said, via Matt Vensel of the Baltimore Sun.

Ayanbadejo said team president Dick Cass stopped him to tell him the team supported him, and that the team was planning to draft a letter to Burns.

The team issued a statement from Cass which said: ?We support Brendon?s right to freedom of speech under the First Amendment.?

?He [said], ?We?re in support of you, and it?s good that you?re able to voice your opinion and say how you feel,?? Ayanbadejo said. ?But Dick personally told me that we?re not an organization that discriminates and he was telling me how he was on Pro Football Talk and he was reading all the comments that people have said and he was overwhelmingly surprised and happy to see that football fans were supporting me and what I said. He told me that I should go there and I should read it.?

Ayanbadejo has been an advocate for gay marriage since 2008, and views it as a civil rights issue.

?I just thought it was important because it?s an equality issue. I see the big picture,? Ayanbadejo said. ?You know, there was a time when women didn?t have rights, black people didn?t have rights, and right now, gay rights is a big issue and it has been for a long time. And so we?re slowly chopping down the barriers to equality.

?We have some minority rights we have to get straight and some gay rights, then we?ll be on our way ? because ultimately, the goal is to be the best country that we can be and we?re always evolving. You just look back to where we came from, and we?ve come a long way, but we still have a ways to go.?

Whether you agree with Ayanbadejo?s politics or not, his willingness to give voice to his opinions is admirable. Too many athletes take the safe way out, for fear of angering any small slice of the public (like Michael Jordan?s ?Republicans buy shoes too,? rationale for not endorsing political candidates).

And whether you agree with Burns or not, you would hope any degree of elected official would have paid just a little more attention in Civics class.

Facebook and politics: Do you block or unfriend over political differences?

By Walter Pacheco, Orlando Sentinel

6:29 p.m. EST, September 6, 2012

A delegate with a red, white and blue top hat poses in the Facebook photo booth at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa, Florida, on August 29, 2012 ahead of the day's Republican National Convention events. (Mladen Antonov, AFP/Getty Images / Sep 06, 2012)

Henrich Ellison is moments away from "unfriending" his cousin on Facebook.

Ellison, a 32-year-old telemarketer from Orlando, is a Democrat, and his cousin is a Republican. Though he doesn't mind the party differences, he's grown tired of the negative images and comments his cousin posts about President Barack Obama and the party platform.

"I never really share my political views on Facebook, and I don't mind that she shares hers, but now she's in high gear, and [the posts] are getting uglier," Ellison said. "I think I've tolerated it for as long as I can."

A tidal wave of political content is flooding Facebook users' news feeds as Election Day approaches, and many users are scrambling for ways to navigate through it. Should users block or unfriend a family member, co-worker or close friend and risk triggering an uncomfortable conversation? Or is there a less-stressful substitute?

The Social Networking Sites and Politics survey released in March by the Pew Internet & American Life Project shows the majority of social-media users ? 82 percent ? do not disconnect from friends with different political views.

But one in five social-media users blocks, unfriends or hides the political content posted by others who post too frequently, differ in political views, argue with the user or others, or worry the posts could offend others on their news feeds, the survey shows.

Orlando social-media strategist Mark Krupinski said "you can't avoid all the [political] noise without taking some sort of action."

His reaction has been to dump some of them ? at least temporarily.

"There are users I don't share useful information to begin with, and now they're getting in my face with opinions I don't need. I just unfriend them," he said. "After the election is over and the noise has died down a bit, I might add some of them back."

Krupinski said Facebook is not much different from face-to-face interactions people have with friends over political issues.

"We already tend to gravitate toward like-minded individuals, but we have friends who are on the fringe," he said. "We tune those folks out during elections and connect afterward."

But Rick Brunson, a journalism professor at the University of Central Florida, strongly disagrees with the practice of blocking a friend on Facebook over politics because it's "antithetical to the spirit of social media and free speech."

"I find [the political posts] mildly irritating, but I tolerate them. I may read the posts or I may not, and then I move on," Brunson said. "That's part of the price you pay for stepping into a social-media platform."

Brunson, who considers himself a "free-speech absolutist," said social media are "all about expressing your opinion."

Facebook users have been sharing endless Internet images mocking the presidential candidates. Some poked fun at Clint Eastwood's empty-chair speech from the Republican National Convention.

Another popular image making the rounds on Facebook switches the silhouettes in the Democratic National Convention logo with something else, such as zombies.

Some Facebook users consider the posts comical, but others find them insulting.

Ellison said some of the images and messages his cousin posts could be misinterpreted as racist and homophobic.

"I know she's not racist or homophobic, but I'm afraid that other friends will see that and think I approve," he said.

Social-media strategist Dawn Jensen said users can always filter Facebook settings if they choose to block certain friends. They also can hide a post or delete a friend from the account in extreme cases.

Still, Jensen suggests a friendlier approach for dealing with a prickly political issue on Facebook.

"If someone is uncomfortable with a political comment or post from a friend, they should let them know and take the conversation off Facebook, discuss it by email, over the phone or in person," Jensen said. "It's really important to be honest and upfront."

Family keep Zane's life happy | Stuff.co.nz

zane strudwicke

DAVID HALLETT

QUALITY TIME: Zane Strudwicke, 3, with his family, mum Donna Hansen, dad Blair Strudwicke and sister Jakaya Strudwicke, 8, at the Ronald McDonald House in Christchurch.

Three-year-old Zane Strudwicke is a happy little boy who loves spending time with friends at playcentre.

He also has terminal cancer.

Diagnosed last month, he has spent the past few weeks receiving treatment in Christchurch, but his family brought him home to Wallacetown this week, hoping to make his last days as enjoyable as possible.

His mother, Donna Hansen, said the family first became aware that something was not quite right when nearly half the children at Zane's playcentre caught a stomach bug.

"Inside myself I knew, I knew right from the start - it wasn't just vomiting," Ms Hansen said.

After a day in hospital Zane was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

He was immediately flown to Christchurch Hospital where tests revealed another three tumours in his brain, and the cancer had spread to his spine.

The largest tumour was removed but it was too dangerous to operate on the remaining tumours, and they decided to bring him home, his mum said.

"Zane's going to go home for palliative care," Ms Hansen said.

"We want him to have a happy life - to see his friends, go to school with his sister Jakaya.

"It's hard because Jakaya's 8, she's going to go through a lot as well."

The decision was hard but they wanted to do what was best for Zane, she said.

"We don't know Zane's life expectancy . . . We want to do everything we can with him."

The news comes three years after Zane's father, Blair Strudwicke, was diagnosed with a brain tumour and given three months to live. His tumour was later found to be benign.

There was no connection between the father and son's tumours, Ms Hansen said.

The Southland community had been extremely supportive and she was overwhelmed by the generosity, she said.

"A lot of people are digging deep into their own pockets, it's quite breathtaking.

"It has just blown me away, I am truly and utterly lost for words by what everyone has done," Ms Hansen said.

Family and friends ran a working bee at their home on Saturday. Helpers were busy gardening, cleaning and stocking the fridge ready for the family's arrival from Christchurch yesterday afternoon. Both cars were re-registered and the local fire brigade filled up the property's water tanks.

Former All Black Jimmy Cowan donated his signed 2011 Rugby World Cup jersey, which has been auctioned on Trade Me. The item attracted more than 2500 views since Sunday and bidding has so far reached more than $1000.

Cowan said he was more than happy to support the cause.

"It's the least that I could do," he said.

"I'm only too willing to help; what better way, to donate the jersey, from all the boys," he said.

Cowan said that he heard about Zane's illness through his girlfriend, who had connections with the family. "I wish the young fella all the best as he goes forward and I hope people keep bidding and they get as much money as they can for it."

A raffle has also been organised, with tickets being sold across Southland. Prizes include a family gondola pass, accommodation and meal vouchers.

HOW TO DONATE

Donations to Zane's apeal can be made online or at any Westpac New Zealand branch. Name: Family of Zane Account number: 031742077428800 Include your surname as a reference so the family can show their appreciation. Fundraising ideas can be posted at stayingstrongforzane.org.nz.
